A Google custom search – the Copyediting.com Usage, Style, and Grammar search – returns 34 instances of “all of a sudden” and 7 instances of “all of the sudden” … the latter to cries of deprecation.

A search of all content on nytimes.com returns about 11,000 instances of “all of a sudden” and about 7,000 instances of “all of the sudden.”

A filtered search of nytimes.com – ignoring sections the copy editors also may ignore – returns about 4,000 instances of “all of a sudden” and 1 instance of “all of the sudden” (quoting Rahm Emanuel, as it happens).
