About Books on VoicePrint This Saturday

# # #

About Books this Saturday, August 13, breaks into multimedia, covering reports from the panel of the Vancouver Sun Book Club on the chapter of Jennifer Egan’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel A Visit from the Goon Squad that she wrote entirely in PowerPoint. (See slideshow above, but first read the comment below for best results.)

More on the slideshow and links to sources for all items in this edition of About Books are in the comment at the end of this post.

Update: Listen now to the archived recording.

About Books – on VoicePrint – is a half-hour program of book news, book reviews and author profiles broadcast in Canada on Saturdays, in most places at 7:30pm local time.

Diane Lepawsky covers nonfiction one week, and I cover fiction the next week. This week is my turn.

VoicePrint programming is “must-carry” for any digital cable service in Canada. Shaw carries it in Vancouver as channel 889 in its Digital Basic package. For the others, check the VoicePrint channel guide.

Anyone can listen online at four different times by choosing any one of four different regional schedules and clicking on Listen Now at the top right of the page for that schedule. For more background, check out About Books: My On-Air Debut on VoicePrint.

  1. A quick way to find any post like this one is to search on Google for three words and a date:

The slideshow is in the voice of 12-year-old Ally Blake, daughter of Drew and Sasha, brother of 13-year-old Lincoln, all characters in A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. The slideshow is chapter 12 of the book.

To see the slideshow at its best, click on the full-screen icon at the bottom right of the frame. Then click the animated continuous play button in the right margin. Be sure you have sound on. Audio kicks in for slide 11, “Songs with Lincoln’s Comments.”

Pause at any time by clicking the Pause icon inside the bell curve on the bottom margin. Restart continuous play from there. Next and Previous icons for slide-by-slide viewing (with no audio) are on either side of that. The quickest way to get back to slide 1 is to refresh/reload the page with your browser (Firefox or whatever) from normal – not full-screen – view.

The slideshow is hosted at slideshare.net … and you can access it as well from the author’s website at this URL:
