Tar Sands Contain 400 Gigatons of Carbon
How much is 400 GtC? Well, you most likely know about 350 ppm as the maximum safe level of CO2 in the atmosphere.
You may know that the level is already above 390 ppm.
If burned, 400 GtC adds an extra 220 ppm.
Easily available reserves of conventional oil and gas are enough to take atmospheric CO2 well above 400 ppm, which is unsafe for life on Earth … However, if the tar sands are thrown into the mix, it is essentially game over.
